Spirits of Mayavarna
Obake is a catch-all term for various shape-changing, intelligent animal spirits. Among the most common are kitsune (foxes), tanuki (raccoon dogs), bakeneko (cats), and hebi (snakes).
Your obake character may look and act very different from other obake, but nevertheless has certain characteristics in common with all other obake.
- Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2.
- Age. As fey creatures, obake age strangely. They come into their full adult growth within one to two decades, and may live anywhere from fifty to two hundred years or more.
- Alignment. Obake range widely in alignment, but due to their fey origins tend strongly toward chaos.
- Type. As an obake, your type and subtype are fey (shapechanger). As a result, you are affected by spells and effects that affect fey and shapechangers. You are not affected by spells and effects that affect humanoids.
- Size. Obake in humanoid form may appear as any common medium-sized humanoid, and can vary in size from a stout dwarf to a slim elf. Your size remains Medium.
- Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
- Darkvision. As fey (and often habitually nocturnal) creatures, obake have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
- Natural Trickster. As a spirit creature steeped in magical tricks, you know when they’re being employed against you. You are immune to magic sleep effects and gain advantage on saving throws made against enchantment and illusion spells and effects.
- Spirit Magic. You know the /dancing lights/ and /minor image/ cantrips. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
- Shapechanger. As an action, you may switch between your humanoid and animal forms. This is similar to a /polymorph/ spell, but you retain the same hit points and mental ability scores in both forms, and you may speak any language you know in either form. Changing between forms is disorienting; you have disadvantage on all ability checks and attack rolls made within 10 rounds of changing forms. Any gear you carry in humanoid form melds into your animal form; any gear you carry or wear in animal form is retained (with potentially humorous results) in humanoid form. Your humanoid form is consistent (in other words, you are recognizably the same person each time you take humanoid form, and you retain the same physical ability scores), and has the same apparent sex as your animal form. Your humanoid form is almost but not quite perfectly human (or elvish, or dwarvish, etc); a suspicious individual’s Perception check is opposed by your Deception check. However, in moments of extreme stress, you may lose control of your transformation. In such situations, make a Will save. On a failure, your animal nature shows through in some obvious way (DM’s discretion). If reduced to zero hit points or unwillingly rendered unconscious—but NOT while sleeping normally—you automatically return to your animal form. As a shapechanger, you may choose to ignore any effect that would forcibly change your shape. If you willingly accept such an effect, you may resume your humanoid or animal form as an action at any time. For example, a kitsune polymorphed into a bird by a friendly spellcaster may resume her fox or humanoid form as an action at will. (However, doing so in midair is probably inadvisable.)
- Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common. As an intelligent animal, you can also converse with animals as though under a permanent (and non-dispellable) /speak with animals/ effect.
